Our Whole Lives
Our Whole Lives helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their relationships, sexuality, gender identity, health, and behavior in the context of their faith. It is offered, with parent or guardian permission, approximately every three years during Sunday school for grades K-6. For grades 7-10, a time is determined by the facilitators, parents, and youth.
Our Whole Lives was co-written by United Church of Christ and Unitarian Universalist Association members and is the accompanying resource used for each of grade groups: K-1, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. There is a Parent Guide for Grades K-1 and Grades 4-6. In Grades 4-6 the book, It's Perfectly Normal is also used.
Our Whole Lives provides participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. It provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills and understand the social, emotional and spiritual aspects of sexuality. This is an inclusionary curriculum that affirms all sexual orientations and gender identities in age-appropriate ways.
For both 7-9 and 10-12 grade curriculum, Our Whole Lives does not teach abstinence as the only healthy option for teens, but teaches more, in particular, what fosters a healthy relationship, and how important respect and maturity is when making sexual choices.
