11/3/2016

The Vitality and Outreach Committee offers these opportunities to engage with the larger community as people of faith.

Witnessing for peace at the Veterans Day Parade Fri March 11. We have an opportunity to witness for peace during Manhattan's annual Veteran's Day parade on Friday 11 November organized by the Manhattan Mennonite Church. Participants will gather at 821 Poyntz Avenue about 9 am on Friday 11 November in or near a booth tent under trees along the northeast edge of the property. Signs, graced with the dove of peace, will include MC-USA's "Pray for Peace, Act for Peace" a "Veterans for Peace" banner and a third sign offering information on obtaining free mental & medical exams for veterans and GIs as well as their families who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress or other ill effects of military service. These are made available through the GI Rights Hotline and the Civilian Medical Resources Network.

Stand in solidarity with the resistance of Native Americans in North Dakota to the Dakota Access Pipeline. For the crime of defending their lands and waters - not to mention the climate of all of us -- the camp at Standing Rock has been met with militarized policing in the service of private gain. How to take action with #StandingRock:  Call the White House (202.456-1111), the Army Corps of Engineers (202-5903), North Dakota Governor Dalrymple (701-328-2200) and your congressional representatives and senators; contribute to Legal Defense Fund (https://fundazr.com/d19fAf); hold in prayer the Standing Rock Water Protectors. This information is from Kansas Interfaith Action (KIFA).

State Mobilization:  Forward Together for Kansas

William Barber, Moral Monday Movement, North Carolina, will be part of the group. This is an inclusive effort of Black, Brown, Muslim, Christian, LGBTQAI, Union, Democrat, Republican, Teachers, and more...so much is at stake. In order to get ready and organized, gathering is scheduled on Saturday, November 12, 10:00am - 4:00pm in Salina @ Trinity United Methodist Church (901 E.Neal Street, Salina, KS 67401).  For more information email Rev Sarah Oglesby-Dunegan, Pastor Caela or Linda Thurston.
